To the Rescue! The First Call for Maine Volunteers in 1861.

Bring a piece of the Pine Tree State’s heroic past into your home with this high-quality restoration of a 1861 recruitment poster. Printed in Augusta, Maine, this broadside represents the urgent mobilization following the attack on Fort Sumter.

    The History:
This poster was the work of Moses B. Lakeman, the recruiting officer at the time who would go on to command the famous 3rd Maine Volunteer Infantry. Stationed "Opposite the Kennebec House" (a grand hotel that once stood in the heart of Augusta), Lakeman was looking for "Able-Bodied Men" to defend a country in danger.

    The Design:
This print is uniquely formatted in landscape orientation, a rarity for Civil War ephemera. It features a majestic eagle with radiant beams of light—a classic symbol of the Union’s resilience—and a dramatic array of 19th-century wood type. This digital restoration preserves the bold, ink-on-paper texture that would have greeted Augusta residents over 160 years ago.
