The Allied Door Gods: A Rare WWII Propaganda Diptych.

This poster set is a high-quality reproduction of an incredible and rare piece of WWII history: a pair of Chinese menshen, or "door gods." Traditionally, these protective deities are pasted on double doors to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune for the New Year.

During the Second World War, this folk art tradition was brilliantly repurposed for propaganda. In this diptych, the ancient gods are replaced by modern heroes: a soldier of the Chinese Nationalist Army (KMT) and an American airman. Together, they trample on Imperial Japanese soldiers, who are depicted as guǐ (demons) with blue-green skin, a common feature in Chinese folk art. The traditional New Year's greeting, "恭賀新禧" (Happy New Year), written from right-to-left, transforms this from simple propaganda into a hopeful prayer for victory and peace.
