Anachronism as Protest: The 1851 "Caution!" Poster, Reborn for 2025.
In 1851, abolitionists plastered Boston with posters warning the Black population that city police, by order of the Mayor and Council, were now functionally slave catchers under the Fugitive Slave Act. This project takes that exact historical framework—its typography, its layout, its urgent tone—and applies it to the current day to draw an unmistakable parallel.
The language has been carefully updated: "slave catchers" become "ICE agents," and the warning is broadened to all immigrant and refugee communities. The beautiful, chaotic typography of the original is preserved to show that while the tools of oppression may change, the rhetoric of resistance remains timeless.
Most importantly, this poster is designed as a functional tool. The inclusion of a QR code to the ACLU's 'Know Your Rights' page turns it from a passive warning into an active instrument for empowerment and legal education. The availability of the poster in multiple languages (Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Swahili, and Somali) is core to its mission of solidarity and accessibility.
