Down With The Traitor, Up With The Stars: A Japanese Reimagining

This double-sided flag vinyl decal is a deep-dive into history, blending specific motifs from the American Civil War and late Edo/Meiji period Japan into a single, cohesive design.

The familiar Fort Sumter garrison flag is transformed. The blue canton with its 33 stars becomes a central, circular mon—the crest of the Union "clan." The 13 red stripes are reborn as a thick, bold border, inspired by depictions of the Hinomaru in classic ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Upon the white field, in script recalling the urgent brush strokes of a battle banner, is a custom-made yojijukugo (four-character idiom): 堕賊揚星 (Dazoku Yōsei). This is our translation of the "Battle Cry of Freedom's" famous line, "Down With The Traitor, Up With The Stars." The style is inspired by the banners of late Edo period rebellions, linking the Union's struggle to a universal spirit of righteous uprising. This double-sided flag is a piece of art, a piece of history, and a piece of cultural dialogue.

The Visual Elements:

The Mon: The blue canton and 33 circular stars of the Fort Sumter flag are reconfigured into a central blue crest, or mon, symbolizing the Union.

The Border: The 13 stripes are reimagined as a thick red border, a design choice influenced by the way Japan's flag was often illustrated in ukiyo-e prints.

The Yojijukugo: The heart of the flag's message is the four kanji, 堕賊揚星 (Dazoku Yōsei). This is a new four-character idiom we created to translate the stirring line from the Union ballad "Battle Cry of Freedom": "Down With The Traitor, Up With The Stars." This practice of rallying under banners with powerful idioms was common during the civil unrest in late 19th-century Japan.
